Alexander McCall Smith è un autore molto prolifico e popolare, maggiormente conosciuto per la sua fortunata serie "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency". Nato a Bulawayo, Rhodesia (oggi Zimbabwe) il 24 agosto 1948, è cittadino britannico e attualmente risiede in Scozia.
McCall Smith è autore di varie serie, tra cui "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", "Professor Dr. Von Igelfeld Entertainment", "Isabel Dalhousie", "44 Scotland Street", e molte altre. Oltre ai suoi lavori di fiction, scrive anche libri di saggistica su diritto medico e bioetica. Prima della sua carriera di scrittore, è stato un professore di legge all'Università del Botswana e professore emerito di diritto medico all'Università di Edimburgo in Scozia.
La serie di "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency", che ha venduto oltre venti milioni di copie, ha portato grande successo a McCall Smith, permettendogli di dedicare il suo tempo alla scrittura di fiction.
