Saul Bellow

Saul Bellow è stato un autore altamente celebrato, nato a Lachine, Quebec, nel 1915 e cresciuto a Chicago. Si è laureato all'Università di Chicago e ha conseguito la laurea in sociologia e antropologia con lode nel 1937 presso l'Università Northwestern. Il percorso di studi post-laurea di Bellow all'Università del Wisconsin è stato interrotto dal suo servizio nella Marina Mercantile durante la seconda guerra mondiale.

La carriera di scrittore di Bellow è iniziata con la pubblicazione del suo primo romanzo, "Dangling Man", nel 1944, seguito da "The Victim" nel 1947. Il suo romanzo di successo, "Le avventure di Augie March", è stato pubblicato nel 1953 ed ha vinto il National Book Award per la narrativa nel 1954. Nel corso della sua carriera, Bellow ha scritto numerosi romanzi acclamati dalla critica, tra cui "Seize The Day" (1956), "Henderson The Rain King" (1959), "Herzog" (1964), "Mosby's Memoirs and Other Stories" (1968) e "Mr. Sammler's Planet" (1970). Gli onori di Bellow includono il fatto di essere il primo americano a ricevere il Premio Letterario Internazionale per "Herzog" nel 1965, di essere insignito della Croix de Chevalier des Arts et Lettres dalla Francia nel 1968 e di ricevere il Premio B'nai B'rith Jewish Heritage per "eccellenza nella letteratura ebraica" nello stesso anno. Nel 1976, gli è stato assegnato il Premio America's Democratic Legacy Award del Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith e il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura. È l'unico romanziere ad aver ricevuto tre National Book Awards, per "The Adventures of Augie March", "Herzog" e "Mr. Sammler's Planet". Bellow è stato anche un drammaturgo, con produzioni a Broadway nel 1966, e ha contribuito con fiction e critica a varie riviste e riviste letterarie. Ha insegnato presso diverse università, tra cui Bard College, Princeton University e l'Università del Minnesota, ed è stato membro del Comitato per i pensieri sociali presso l'Università di Chicago.
