Vaclav Smil

Vaclav Smil è un professore emerito di rilievo presso l'Università del Manitoba a Winnipeg, in Canada. Ha avuto una carriera accademica di rilievo, avendo completato i suoi studi di post-laurea presso la Facoltà di Scienze Naturali di Carolinum University a Praga e presso il College of Earth and Mineral Sciences della Pennsylvania State University. Gli interessi di ricerca di Smil sono ampi e interdisciplinari, abbracciano aree come gli studi sull'energia, ambientali, alimentari, demografici, economici, storici e sulla politica pubblica. Ha anche applicato la sua competenza nello studio degli affari energetici, alimentari e ambientali in Cina.

Smil è un fellow della Royal Society of Canada, ed è stato nominato tra i Top 100 Global Thinkers da Foreign Policy nel 2010. Il suo lavoro è stato ampiamente riconosciuto e ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il Premio per il progresso della scienza dall'American Association for Public Understanding of Technology and Science. È stato un oratore richiestissimo, avendo parlato in oltre 250 workshop e conferenze in Africa, Stati Uniti, Asia, Canada ed Europa. Oltre alle sue attività accademiche, Smil è sposato con Eva, una medico, e insieme hanno un figlio, David, che lavora come chimico organico sintetico. Il lavoro di Smil ha avuto un impatto significativo sui campi degli studi sull'energia, ambientali, alimentari, demografici, economici, storici e sulla politica pubblica.
