Charles Whiting

Charles Whiting, nato nell'area di Bootham a York, in Inghilterra, fu un prolifico scrittore e storico militare, noto per i suoi thriller e per i suoi numerosi pseudonimi, tra cui Ian Harding, Duncan Harding, K.N. Kostov, John Kerrigan, Klaus Konrad e Leo Kessler. L'interesse per la scrittura di Whiting iniziò durante gli anni dell'università e il suo primo romanzo venne pubblicato nel 1954. Già nel 1958 aveva all'attivo tre thriller ambientati durante la guerra.

La vita di Whiting fu segnata da una serie di esperienze diversificate che avrebbero influenzato la sua produzione letteraria. Dopo aver lasciato la Nunthorpe Grammar School all'età di 16 anni, mentì sulla sua età per arruolarsi nell'esercito britannico. Servì nel 52° Reggimento Ricognizione e prestò servizio in Francia, Paesi Bassi, Belgio e Germania durante le ultime fasi della seconda guerra mondiale. Come soldato, Whiting osservò i conflitti tra alti ufficiali britannici e americani, che avrebbe successivamente descritto ampiamente nei suoi scritti. Dopo la guerra, rimase in Germania, dove completò gli esami di livello A attraverso un corso per corrispondenza e insegnò inglese. Successivamente studiò Storia e Lingua Tedesca all'Università di Leeds, dove ebbe l'opportunità di studiare in diverse università europee.

La carriera di Whiting come scrittore si distinse per la sua straordinaria produttività, con oltre 350 titoli al suo attivo, tra cui 70 saggi su vari argomenti, dalla intelligence service nazista alle unità militari britanniche durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Whiting svolse una varietà di lavori, tra cui traduttore in una fabbrica chimica tedesca, pubblicista, corrispondente per The Times e scrittore di articoli per diverse riviste, tra cui International Review of Linguistics, Soldier e Playboy. Nonostante il suo successo, Whiting rimase un uomo schivo e riservato, che continuò a scrivere e pubblicare libri ben oltre gli 80 anni. Morì il 24 luglio 2007, lasciando la moglie e il figlio.
