Chester Himes

Chester Bomar Himes è stato un autore americano principalmente noto per i suoi romanzi di mistero, thriller e fiction letteraria. Iniziò la sua carriera di scrittore durante la detenzione in carcere per rapina a mano armata negli anni '30. Mentre era incarcerato, Himes produsse storie brevi per varie pubblicazioni, tra cui Esquire e Abbott's Monthly. Dopo il suo rilascio, si concentrò su romanzi semi-autobiografici di protesta.

Nel 1953, Himes emigrò in Francia, dove fu avvicinato da Marcel Duhamel di Gallimard per scrivere una serie di romanzi gialli per Série Noire. Questa serie aveva precedentemente pubblicato opere di autori notevoli come Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett e Jim Thompson. L'inclusione di Himes nella serie rappresentò una tappa significativa, poiché fu il primo autore nero ad essere presentato. Il Ciclo di Harlem, un risultato di questa collaborazione, portò la fama a Himes quando vinse il Grand Prix de Littérature Policière per La Reine des Pommes (ora noto in inglese come A Rage in Harlem) in 1958. Tre di questi romanzi sono stati adattati in film: Cotton Comes to Harlem, diretto da Ossie Davis nel 1970; Come Back, Charleston Blue (basato su The Heat's On) nel 1972; e A Rage in Harlem, con Gregory Hines e Danny Glover nel 1991. Himes si trasferì in Spagna nel 1968, dove risiedette fino alla sua morte.
