Clifford D. Simak fu un autore di fama di science fiction, noto per la sua produttiva carriera e i numerosi premi ricevuti. Nacque nel 1904 in una fattoria del sud-ovest del Wisconsin e iniziò la sua carriera come giornalista. Simak lavorò in un piccolo giornale prima di diventare caporedattore del Minneapolis Star-Tribune, dove scrisse fiction nel suo tempo libero.
La scrittura di Simak gli valse molti onori nella comunità della science fiction. Fu insignito di tre premi Hugo, un premio Nebula e fu nominato terzo Gran Maestro dall'SFWA (Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) nel 1977. A questi riconoscimenti si aggiunse il Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement dall'Horror Writers Association. Il suo lavoro non è stato solo riconosciuto dai fan, ma anche dai colleghi, che lo hanno tenuto in grande considerazione.
Lo stile narrativo di Simak era noto per la sua unicità e immaginazione. Il suo libro "City", pubblicato nel 1952, è uno dei suoi lavori più famosi.
