E. Phillips Oppenheim è un autore britannico di rilievo, noto per i suoi avvincenti romanzi misti di mistero, romance e thriller. Nacque a Londra nel 1866 da Edward Oppenheimer, un commerciante di cuoio, e sua moglie Henrietta Budd Oppenheimer. Oppenheim trascorse una parte significativa della sua infanzia aiutando il padre nel suo commercio di cuoio e, dopo aver lasciato la scuola all'età di sedici anni, iniziò a lavorarvi a tempo pieno. Trascorse più di due decenni nell'azienda di famiglia prima di dedicarsi alla scrittura. Il primo romanzo di Oppenheim, "Expiation", venne pubblicato nel 1887 e continuò a scrivere sotto lo pseudonimo di Anthony Partridge.
Dopo la morte del padre, Oppenheim si concentrò maggiormente sulla sua carriera da scrittore e iniziò a pubblicare opere di successo sotto il suo vero nome. Alcuni dei suoi romanzi più popolari includono "Il monaco di Cruta" (1894), "Il misterioso signor Sabin" (1898) e "Il principe illustre" (1910). I romanzi di Oppenheim sono noti per la loro intrigo, spionaggio internazionale e parabole quotidiane, con una gamma di eroi che vanno dagli uomini di alto rango nella tradizione del "Rogue" a spie e gourmet sofisticati. Le opere di Oppenheim sono state adattate in oltre 30 film, con la sua opera più celebre, "La grande imitazione" (1920), filmata tre volte. Viene ampiamente considerato il primo scrittore di fiction spionistica come la conosciamo oggi e gli viene attribuita l'invenzione della scuola di "Rogue Male" di thriller d'avventura. Il successo letterario di Oppenheim gli permise di condurre uno stile di vita lussuoso, acquistando una villa in Francia e una barca a vela, e intrattenendo più di 250 persone alle sue feste in società altolocata. Scrisse 116 romanzi, 39 volumi di racconti, cinque romanzi sotto lo pseudonimo di Anthony Partridge e un volume di autobiografia, "The Pool of Memory" (1939).
