John Herbert Varley, noto comunemente come John Varley, è un autore bestseller di science fiction. Le sue opere sono rinomate per l'esplorazione di idee grandi, personaggi convincenti e scienza plausibile. Varley è nato ad Austin, in Texas, ma ha trascorso gli anni formativi a Fort Worth e in seguito a Port Arthur. Si è diplomato alla Nederland High School prima di iscriversi alla Michigan State University.
