Julia Alvarez è une autrice affermata, nata il 27 marzo 1950 a New York City. Tuttavia, ha trascorso i primi dieci anni della sua vita nella Repubblica Dominicana, prima che la sua famiglia si trasferisse di nuovo negli Stati Uniti nel 1960, quando aveva dieci anni. Questa esperienza di passaggio tra due culture diventerà in seguito un tema significativo nel suo lavoro.
