Robert Penn Warren

Robert Penn Warren fu un rinomato poeta, romanziere e critico letterario americano, noto soprattutto per essere uno dei fondatori della teoria letteraria del New Criticism e per essere l'unica persona ad aver vinto Premi Pulitzer sia per la narrativa che per la poesia. Warren nacque il 24 aprile 1905 a Guthrie, Kentucky, e frequentò successivamente la Clarksville High School nel Tennessee, l'Università Vanderbilt nel 1925 e l'Università della California, Berkeley nel 1926. In seguito, ottenne la laurea in Letteratura come borsista Rhodes al New College, Oxford, in Inghilterra, nel 1930.

La carriera di insegnante di Warren iniziò nel 1930 al Southwestern College (ora Rhodes College) di Memphis, Tennessee. Insegnò in seguito all'Università Vanderbilt e alla Louisiana State University (LSU). Mentre era alla LSU, Warren fondò la rivista letteraria influente The Southern Review con Cleanth Brooks nel 1935. I lavori di Warren riflettono fortemente temi e mindset del Sud, e pubblicò la sua opera più famosa, "Tutti gli uomini del re", mentre era professore all'Università del Minnesota. Successivamente visse a Fairfield, Connecticut, e Stratton, Vermont.

I lavori di critica letteraria di Warren includono "New Directions in Prose and Poetry" (1935), "Understanding Poetry" (1938) e "Selected Essays" (1958).

Warren vinse il Premio Pulitzer per la narrativa per "Tutti gli uomini del re" nel 1947 e il Premio Pulitzer per la Poesia nel 1958 per "Promises: Poems 1954-1956" e nel 1979 per "Now and Then: Poems 1976-1978". Ricevette anche una borsa di studio Guggenheim per studiare in Italia durante il regno di Benito Mussolini. Warren morì il 15 settembre 1989 a causa di complicazioni dovute al cancro alle ossa.
