William Wilberforce fu un politico britannico, filantropo e importante abolizionista, noto soprattutto per la sua campagna durata tutta la vita contro il commercio transatlantico di schiavi. In qualità di membro del Parlamento, svolse un ruolo fondamentale nell'approvazione dello Slave Trade Act del 1807, che abolì la tratta degli schiavi nell'Impero Britannico. I suoi sforzi andarono oltre l'abolizionismo, poiché sostenne anche riforme sociali più ampie e fondò organizzazioni influenti come la Church Mission Society e il precursore della RSPCA.
Devoto cristiano, il lavoro di Wilberforce era profondamente radicato nelle sue convinzioni religiose, che guidarono il suo impegno per le cause umanitarie.
